This is the perfect (not really but the best we can do) idea for right this moment in today's world, take a walk. Thank you for these great links Tara.

Far be it from me to not jump in on this topic, as I’m about 3 weeks from launching on a little walkabout of my own. After a recent near miss, could have been really awful accident, I decided I was given another chance at life, and I intend to get the most I can from every minute.

On March 4, our official launch date, I will be 66 years, 5 months, and 5 days. From March 4 until we arrive at the Canadian border, not a single day will be subtracted from my lifespan. Days in the wild are bonus days added to one’s total allotment.

I fly from Boise to San Diego on March 2 to a little town near the Mexican border where a marker for Mile 0 of the Pacific Crest Trail is located. Almost everything is ready, all the gear is purchased, trail food prep is keeping the kitchen busy, and I’m making sure I have all the Kindle books loaded that I want to take. I have the latest version of “Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills,” “Where There is No Doctor,” and my 800 other favorite books. Now it all needs to be weighed and judged whether it’s worth the weight.

Then comes five or six months of peace, pain, panic, patience, persistence, and pacing. Even now, the worst part of the trip is the thought of walking up to the trail marker at the Canadian border and knowing I once again immerse myself in the numbing comforts of civilization.

Maybe along the trail somewhere, I will have an epiphany about the next big thing.

Glad to hear the preparations are going well. You know I’ll be following vicariously. Will you take a film camera that doesn’t need charging?

I’m taking a solar charger that works well.

Good idea! Kindle and camera food all in one.

Exciting stuff. How you'll find time to hike, set up/ tear down camp, cook meals and clean up - and still find time to read is beyond me but then again you're obviously very good at stuffing a lot of life into a few short years.

A walk outside - the free opportunity to step away from our relatively caged status quo to a very free-form, widened perspective. It can't hurt and it certainly can help. As we say to the horses - "Walk-on"

Yes, an equine sensibility is sometimes just the thing. :-)

Walk on.

Despite...and because of...the tears.

Right at the start of Covid, I participated in a walking challenge to raise money for a cause dear to me. I'll never be sure if that's what precipitated the Achilles tendon issues that followed (I was not new to walking, nor fitness in general, though I did log in more miles than usual) but I was left nursing big pain in both legs for years. In time, I was able to return to most other forms of exercise, but walking more than a short distance was a deal breaker. I am FINALLY getting back to taking on more than a neighborhood stroll and am thrilled. Walking can be a moving meditation. It can be the best way to see the world. It is a balm for these times. Thank you, Tara and all the writers you've featured here. 💚

That feels to me like a heavy burden, when walking is ruled out. It seems unfair: plain, unassuming, homely walking turned harmful. I agree about the moving meditation and hope you can keep going farther and farther.

Thank you Tara for the mention and the wishes! Yes, these are busy days for our growing family. Yesterday we gave the little one his name: Achiya, after a not so famous but very important biblical figure from the times of Solomon.

Great resources about walking, the centerpiece of health and wellness. Way to go! (See what I just said? Yet another common metaphor confirming how walking is who we are - "way to go")

Here’s little Achiya yesterday, and his big brother Eitan.
